Last week we looked at how our customers’ or clients’ personalities determine how they engage in social networking, as well as which social networks they tend to hang out at. We also learned how to gauge where we are on the social network scale; what are our social network preferences and habits. This week, we will back up last week’s information with our analysis of flow patterns in social media interaction.
Analyzing Flow Patterns
We start by asking ourselves basic questions:
- What kinds of posts you create get the most comments?
- Who and what type are your most engaged friends or followers?
- Who always show up on the other networks you visit?
- What motivates your most engaged fellow networker?
Basic Social Metrics
- Also, there are some basic social metrics you should keep your eye on; for example, visitors, traffic sources, comments, bounce rate, etc. We will cover this more in our upcoming webinar.
- Although, the four major networks provide some form of tracking and feedback, studies show that approximately 85% of all online entrepreneurs and small companies don’t bother to track.
- Start by ensuring that you install the social sharing widgets into your blog, websites, and social media pages. This way, your site visitors can “like,” “share,” and “tweet,” your published content.
- Track which posts generate the most comments and are socially shared.
- Include calls to action in posts and on social networks enticing people to share, tweet, etc.
- Use YouTube to create “how to” videos, video reviews, etc. to share on social networks.
- Use Google Analytics to track your content. We will cover more on specific tracking for Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, and Twitter in the upcoming blog posts and webinar.
- Promptly answer or acknowledge every comment or if on Facebook, respond and/or “like” the comment.
Data Value
But how can you recognize the value of your data?
When analyzing results; for instance, increased participation, did it have any impact on converting visitors to subscribers or sales?
Keeping Your Followers Engaged
Keep in mind that “flow” doesn’t just refer to metrics but also means keeping your fan or follower happy and engaged.
Try out different types of content to see which one keep your followers engaged; for example, polls, quizzes, contests, “how to” videos, questions, etc.
Although pre-scheduled posts keep you in front of your fans and followers, it is important that you personally participate in order to engage with them.
Do you track your data? If so, which analytical tools do you use? Leave us a comment below. We would love to hear from you. Next week we will continue our discussion on social media for business. We will cover social media procrastination.

When you have a business website and are trying new ways to increase your Internet website traffic, blogging is a great way to get noticed.
Blogging is a good way to express your personal thoughts about various subjects that pertain to your business. You can write about how to market your business or how to increase the number of customers. You can also blog about why you started your business. Your readers’ comments are a good tactic to get ideas about what to change and/or what to write next. Show your readers that you are listening to what they have to say by responding to their comments.
It is vitally important to have a well-written blog. Always use proper grammar, and spell check your blog post before you post it. Using the proper SEO (search engine optimization) keywords will increase your ranking on the search engines and that will increase the amount of readers to your blog site. SEO keywords pop out at your readers in your blog, and it is always helpful to have hyperlinks, links and/or pictures to drive your readers to your website. These are good steps to take to boost website traffic.
When you promote your blogs with catchy titles on various social media networks, it will attract readers to your blog site. If your blog site is part of your website, your readers will be more inclined to visit the rest of your site.
Another way to boost website traffic is providing Internet marketing services offering to write blog posts for other businesses. It’s a terrific marketing tool for businesses that want to have blogs on their site but do not have the time to write. With blogging there are endless ways to boost your website traffic one blog post at a time.

Is your username on your WordPress blog “admin?”
If you want to personalize your blog by changing the username from admin to something that represents you, following are the directions:
Go to your Dashboard, scroll down to the Users panel, which is on the left-hand side, and select Your Profile. On the Profile page, insert your desired new public username in the field that says “Nickname (required).” In the field directly below that, which reads “Display name publicly as,” select from the drop-down how you want your name cited on your blog (your new username). There is no need to save your settings prior to doing this; the drop-down menu will automatically populate with your new username, which you entered in the Nickname field. Click on the “Update Profile” button at the bottom of the screen. Your new public username is now changed.

Recently I went on a virtual e-book tour to promote my newly released e-book, “Online Marketing Tools for Today’s Small Business.” For us entrepreneurs and small business owners, writing can be an inexpensive way of marketing our small businesses. This can involve writing articles, blog posts, and/or e-books. It is not necessary to be a well-known author in order to write or have virtual book tours. If you choose to write e-books, you can go on virtual e-book tours to promote your e-book. As a result, your services and/or products, and your business will be promoted at the same time. If you are an author, you, too, can do virtual book tours to promote your books.
Because of today’s technology and blogs, book tours can be done virtually, and it is an inexpensive, creative tactic to advertise your e-books or books. However, coordinating virtual book tours can be time-consuming. If you don’t have time to arrange the tour, outsource this task to a Virtual Assistant. The process consists of you (or your Virtual Assistant) and blog owners coordinating dates for when you will stop by their blogs. On the date of your tour stop, the blog owner can interview you or you can participate in a question and answer session with the blog owners’ readers. If you choose to do an interview, you supply the blog owners with the questions and answers for them to post on their blogs, which is the standard procedure in the current media world. Periodically, you check in to see if there are any questions or comments from the blog readers you need to address regarding your interview.
To encourage the blog readers to get involved, hold some type of random drawing for anyone who submits a comment or question. At http://random.org/, you enter the e-mail addresses of the participants in a list randomizer and a random e-mail address is selected. This would be your random winner. On my tour, I gave away free copies of my e-book to random winners who participated, as well as to the blog owners as a way of expressing my gratitude for them hosting my tour stops.
In my e-book, I discuss various online marketing tools and strategies, which include virtual book tours. If you would like to learn about additional marketing tools that you can use in your online marketing plan, click here to purchase my e-book, as well as find out more about it.
